Βιογραφικό:

Babis Savakis is Professor of Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics at the Medical School of the University of Crete and President and Scientific Director of the Biomedical Sciences Research Centre "Alexander Fleming". He received an MD from the Medical School of the University of Athens, a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University, and conducted post-doctoral research at the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge. From 1984 to 2009, when he moved to BSRC, he was Adjunct Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IMBB-FoRTH). His research has focused mainly on the molecular mechanisms of genetic transposition, genetic engineering of insects of importance to man, and functional genomic analysis in Drosophila and in mammals using transposable genetic elements. An EMBO member since 2000, he has served as President (Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO) of the Greek National Organization for Medicines EOF and on several research policy committees in Greece and abroad, including the Task Force on Bioinformatics and the External Advisory Group on Human Resources, Mobility and Marie Curie Actions of the European Commission, the Greek National Research and Technology Council, and the Scientific Council for Biology and Biotechnology of the National Research and Technology Council.  During a 2-year sabbatical at Imperial College London in 2006-2008 he participated actively in launching the European Research Council (ERC) as Senior Advisor to its first President Prof. Fotis Kafatos. Since 2003 he is National Delegate to the European Molecular Biology Conference and the EMBL Council, where he has been elected Chair between 2007 and 2009. He is currently member of the National Bioethics Commission, the National Commission for Human Rights, the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) Scientific Advisory Board and the International Advisory Committee of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC).
